Research is an integral component of the mission, goals and objectives of the School of Dentistry of the University of Mississippi Medical Center. This is supported by the mission statement of the School of Dentistry to "maintain an effective teaching environment while preparing scientifically minded, clinically competent, community oriented, ethical dentists to serve the oral health needs of the state of Mississippi." Scientifically minded health care, in the context of the mission statement, refers to the judicious and conscientious integration of the best and most appropriate available scientific evidence in the management of individual patients. It also refers to the effective use of research findings in designing and implementing a treatment plan for dental patients. Dental schools increasingly perceive the need and importance to train students to read and comprehend the scientific literature and to capture the statistical and clinically significant and valid evidence. As a consequence, research is incorporated into the School of Dentistry's mission statement and everyday activities.
Recognizing the overall importance of research in dental education, the School of dentistry has integrated the research process into the dental educational program. The goals and objectives are:
- To encourage and support multidisciplinary research and scholarly activities for faculty and students.
- To assist in acquiring extramural funding for faculty and students.
- To promote collaborations among clinical, basic, and behavioral sciences faculty in educational, research, and service programs.
