    Research Program

The primary goal of the ACT Center Research Program is to advance scientific knowledge related to tobacco use. Our projects emphasize factors that serve to maintain tobacco use as well as to promote successful cessation and relapse prevention. Levels of investigation include basic science (genetics, physiological mechanisms), applied clinical science (assessment of nicotine dependence and other factors, and treatment strategies), treatment and public health (larger scale treatment deployment, population differences, treatment program characteristics, and cost-effectiveness). The following is a list of ongoing efforts.

    1. Mapping Susceptibility Loci for Nicotine Dependence. (Collaboration with the University of Texas Health Sciences Center, San Antonio).

    2. Tobacco Quitlines. (Collaboration with Oregon Research Institute).

    3. Smoking Cessation Research in Primary Care Treatment Centers (SCRIPT): Tobacco Cessation Outcome Comparing Tailored Care/Treatment-Matching and the AHRQ Guidelines..

    4. Effects of Tobacco Product Use on MAO (Monoamine Oxidase) Activity and Biogenic Amines

    5. Effect of Gender and Race on Pulmonary Function Test Changes with Smoking Cessation

    6. Airway Inflammation and Resolution (AIR).

    7. Chewer's Choice Program. (Collaboration between ACT Center and Oregon Research Institute; PI: Herb Severson, PhD).
