Course No. 616-4. Preclinical Pediatric Dentistry. This is a lecture and laboratory course designed to give students information and preclinical lab experience in treating pediatric patients. Lecture topics include preventive dentistry, local anesthesia, restorative dentistry, pulp therapy, and space maintenance. Laboratory experience include preparing and restoring primary teeth for amalgam and resin restorations, crowns and the fabrication of a fixed and removable space maintainer. Spring quarter. (48 clock hours)

Course No. 633-2. Management of the Pediatric Patient. This is a lecture course designed to introduce students to behavior management of the child dental patient. Skills in communication and behavior shaping are stressed. A range of patients are discussed from the so-called normal to those with special needs. Winter quarter. (16 clock hours)

Course No. 698-2. Dentistry for Special Needs Children (elective). This course provides the student experience in the dental treatment of children with special health care needs. (i.e. developmentally disabled, medically compromised) Students will actively participate in the daily activities of the Hospital Dental Clinics service for children, referred from Children’s Rehabilitation Clinic, Children’s Cancer Clinic, Child Development Clinic, and other Pediatric Specialty Care areas. Principles of Behavior Management, Conscious Sedation, General Anesthesia and Hospital Dentistry will be emphasized. Spring quarter (32 clock hours) Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Neva Eklund, one student per two week session.
