The Department of Biomedical Materials Science at the University
of Mississippi Medical Center offers a graduate program at the
M.S. and Ph.D. levels. The education of the student focuses on
the fundamental understanding of materials science and the biological
principles that govern the response of biomedical materials and
devices when implanted in the body. Students are educated through
didactic instruction, laboratories, and involvement in active
research projects. Graduates of this program will have the necessary
tools for careers in academic teaching and research, as well as
the skills needed by industry.
The entering student should have an undergraduate degree from
an accredited institution of higher learning in an area of engineering,
physics, chemistry or biology. However, students from other disciplines
with appropriate preparation will be considered. It is expected
that, since students will be recruited from a range of backgrounds,
some will be stronger in the biological sciences while others
will have greater strengths in the physical sciences and engineering
disciplines. Candidates must show a level of written and oral
proficiency in English.
